STEPS TO PLANNING A DESTINATION ELOPEMENT WEDDING

1. Pick Your Dream Location

When you are no longer bound by the limitations of a traditional big wedding your options are endless! What resonates with your dream vision, an indoor or outdoor wedding, urban or rural, tropical or arctic?

2. Research Legal Requirements
Each location has its own rules for marriage licenses. Research the legalities for your destination, including any waiting periods, necessary documents, or local officiants.

3. Set Your Budget
Determine your budget, considering travel, accommodations, vendors, and any special activities you’d like to include. Be realistic about expenses and prioritize the things that matter most.

4.Connect With A Photographer or Planner

With extensive experience traveling as well as living in both Maui & British Columbia, I love sharing info on the best secret spots and insight into each area’s unique charms.

5. Decide on an Officiant
If you’re eloping abroad, some locations offer officiants who can conduct ceremonies in multiple languages or customize your vows. Some destinations allow self solemnization, or you can skip the paperwork all together and have a symbolic ceremony.

6. Book Travel and Accommodations
Secure flights and accommodations for both you and any guests joining you. Consider staying near your ceremony site for convenience, and choose accommodations that reflect the experience you want.

7. Choose Your Attire
Pick attire that’s comfortable and weather-appropriate for your destination. Make sure to account for outdoor conditions like wind, rain, or heat when choosing your wedding clothes.

8. Select Vendors
Find local vendors who specialize in elopements. This could include florists, hair and makeup artists, musicians, and videographers. Many vendors offer packages designed for intimate weddings.

9. Plan an Adventure or Activities
Incorporate your destination’s unique experiences into your day. Whether it’s hiking, a private boat tour, or a local wine tasting, these activities can add personal touches to your elopement.

10. Finalize the Details
As your big day approaches, confirm all bookings, such as your officiant, vendors, and venue. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and have a backup plan for unexpected conditions.

11. Enjoy the Moment
On your wedding day, take a deep breath and enjoy the experience. Your elopement is all about celebrating your love in a way that feels authentic and special to both of you.

Thinking eloping is supposed to be less planning and more relaxing?

 I agree!

HOW MUCH DOES A DESTINATION ELOPEMENT COST?

In the USA couples hire on average 10 vendors and spend $33,000 on their traditional wedding day, with the venue being the highest ticket item at 6-12k.

When you choose a smaller elopement you are able to be more intentional with how you invest your time and money into your celebration.

When budgeting for a destination wedding don't forget to account for travel, accommodations, permits, and any activities or extras you might want to make your adventure special.

TIPS TO SAVE BIG ON YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING

  • consider off-peak season for better flight, hotel and activity rental rates

  • off season varies across the globe so check different locations with similar landscapes, weather, attractions

  • snag deals by flying earlier in the week (Monday or Tuesday)

  • fly the second flight of the day instead of the first

  • check google flights first for the widest selection of options

  • open a travel friendly bank account with no foregin exchange fees and unlimited ATM withdrawls

  • opt for a credit card with travel rewards like Chase Sapphire Reserve (US)/American Express Aeroplan (Canada)

  • asking for deals face to face can go a long way towards an upgrade at your accommodations

  • consider a weekday wedding ceremony

  • skip the venue & consider something with a low price tag like a library, park, garden, or public beaches

  • forgo decorations and use natures beauty for a stunning backdrop

  • prioritize what matters most, remember you can have a magical elopement experience at any budget

HOW TO PICK THE BEST LOCATIONS TO ELOPE

Choosing the best elopement location can mean something different to everyone. It's about prioritizing what will make you as a couple feel most celebrated while choosing an experience that feels most true to you.

So how do you ever decide where is best for you? â€‹

Helpful Factors to Consider:

Landscape & Climate

Close your eyes and image what sounds, smells, and sights would surround you on your dream adventure. Is there a cool ocean breeze, majestic mountain peaks and turquoise lakes or lush vibrant rainforest? From crashing waterfalls to steep cliff sides, each location brings its own distinct vibe and feel to your adventure and photos.

Seasonal Weather

Each location you consider will have its own temperature and weather patterns that change throughout the year. Do you usually prefer warm days, crisp nights, sunny skies or moody clouds? Do you find peace and happiness snuggling up together enjoying  a vibrant sunset, misty morning coffee, or snowy hike through towering trees? The time of year in each location can drastically change the landscapes overall appearance, from, wildflower filled meadows to snowy peaks.

  • Do you have a certain month you would like to get married? Consider what the weather might be in different parts of the world during that timeframe.

  • What kinds of outdoor adventures might you want to do during your elopement like skiing or sailing? Is that influenced by the time of year in the locations your considering.

Accessibility

Accessibility of locations is important to consider both for yourselves and any guests you may be asking to come along. Stunning venues can be accessible for all levels of mobility so think about the following

  • How much travel do you want to do? Do you want to fly to your destination, take a boat, or drive?

  • How do you want to access the location. Examples: 4 wheel drive vehicle, hike, horse, helicopter?

  • Do your guests have the same fitness and mobility level as you and can they reach the destination easily?

  • If you are picturing an intimate and remote ceremony but the location is easily accessible how crowded is the actual location you have in mind?

Budget & Accommodations

The style and type of accommodations you are dreaming of  for your elopement can impact the locations you may want to consider. Your budget may stretch more or less in different countries depending on currency, exchange rate, high and low season demand, etc. Think about whether you want to stay somewhere very popular that may need to be booked well in advance or if you love trying less known spots that can be booked last minute.

  • Do you prefer camping, a ski chalet, tree house, over water bungalow, luxury 5 star retreat?

What would you like to see?

When you choose a destination elopement you open your experience up to endless cultural, historical and natural attractions. Romanticize your life by adding a little everyday fantasy with a stroll along old world cobblestone streets, marvel at enchanting national forests, or dance under bright stars and moonlit beaches.

What activities would you like to do?

Maybe you love the idea of hiking to an alpine lake at sunrise for a peaceful picnic breakfast amongst the mountaintops, sailing to a dazzling snorkel beach to exchange vows then enjoying a dinner cooked by a private chef while whales play in the ocean all around, or cozying up in a secluded cabin surrounded by crisp fall air and enchanting nature. Eloping means you're free to build your own personal, once-in-a-lifetime adventure so if you can dream it we can do it! If you have been looking for a reason to live out your wildest dreams, what better opportunity than a grand celebration of your love story! The best part of a destination elopement is your wedding isn't limited to only one day, so try to think about how long you want your adventure to last when considering what activities you can fit into your schedule.

Who would you like to join you?

When planning your ideal location it's helpful to think about if you want a "just us" experience or if you would like to invite a few of your closest and most supportive friends or family. There are so many unique ways to include your loved ones in your elopement wedding if that is what you want. Some couples choose to enjoy their intimate ceremony together in private, then invite a small group to join them afterwards to celebrate or host a separate larger reception back home when they return. Other couples have loved ones write letters of well wishes to bring on the journey and read together after the ceremony around a bonfire or snuggled up together during a candlelit dinner.  Something to consider if you do want to include guests, its important to make sure these individuals will only add happiness and support, not stress to your wedding. Its also important to note the smaller more remote locations and places that require permits may have restrictions on the number of people that can join.

  • if the venue is small can it accommodate guests if you're imagining a cozy spot

  • can guests actually make it to the location you have in mind because of mobility
